Georgia Takes a Dive in the NCAA Baseball Rankings

D1 baseball unveiled the latest NCAA baseball rankings, and Georgia suffered one of the most significant drops. The Bulldogs fell from the No. 5 ranking to No. 10 after week ten of the season, which did not treat them as nicely as prior weeks.

Georgia Goes 1-3 During the Week, Drops Out of the Top 5

The most recent week of college baseball started well for the Bulldogs, as they took down 14th-ranked Georgia Tech, 5-2, on April 15. Under the bright lights of the Atlanta Braves’ home ballpark, Georgia scored two runs thanks to an RBI single from first baseman Ryland Zaborowski and a bases-loaded walk from leftfielder Nolan McCarthy.

After Tech third baseman Will Baker tied the game with an RBI in both the third and fourth innings, the Bulldogs responded with two home runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Centerfielder Devin Obee cracked a solo shot, while shortstop Kolby Branch hit a two-run dinger. The pitching staff cared for the rest, as Georgia’s last six pitchers combined for 5.1 scoreless innings.

That set up the Dawgs with a ranked conference series in Nashville between them and Vanderbilt. The 19th-ranked Commodores had just come off a game in which they could not handily beat the Lipscomb Bisons, prevailing in extra innings 5-4. So, perhaps it was expected that Georgia would take at least two of three from this series.

Vandy Sweeps The Dawgs, Flips Rankings

After Georgia third baseman Slate Alford hit a lead-off home run to start the series, Vanderbilt starter JD Thompson threw eight complete innings, giving up only four more hits and striking out a whopping 14 batters. The Vandy offense finally came through in the late innings, with a home run, an infield hit in the seventh, and another infield hit in the eighth. Vandy pitchers Sawyer Hawks picked up the save in the 3-1 victory.

The second game had much more offense, but the Commodores got the lead first and held onto it with an iron grip. After six innings, Georgia pitchers had given up 13 runs on 11 hits, walking seven batters and giving up four long balls. Georgia’s three-run fourth inning and four-run seventh inning were not nearly enough to erase the deficit, and Vandy took the series with a 13-7 win.

Georgia’s last chance to salvage a victory ended with a 5-2 loss. Like the first game, the Dawgs opened the scoring with a solo home run, this time in the fourth inning from rightfielder Robbie Burnett. But Vandy tied it a half-inning later, and put it out of reach with a two-run shot from first baseman Riley Nelson. A couple of runs later, Georgia finished Easter weekend on a 3-game losing streak. After the sweep, Vanderbilt jumped up to the No. 9 spot in the rankings.

The Bulldogs will look to hop off the schneid and back into the top-5 starting in week 11 on the road against No. 2 Clemson. The game will air on ESPNU on April 22 at 8 p.m.
