Florida State University (FSU) football is in challenging times, as head coach Mike Norvell’s ambitious rebuild faces considerable challenges. Wide receiver Hykeem Williams’s recent departure to the transfer portal has raised questions about the program’s future and stability.
Mike Norvell’s Latest Contract and Transfer Portal Woes
To strengthen the program, Norvell amended his contract in December 2024, offering $4.5 million to FSU’s “Vision of Excellence” campaign. This fundraising campaign seeks to elevate Florida State sports by improving the student-athlete experience, coaching, facilities, and fan engagement.

Hykeem Williams, formerly considered the crown jewel of Norvell’s recruiting efforts, has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal. The South Florida native came to FSU as a highly regarded 5-star prospect and was the highest-rated wide receiver signed by head coach Mike Norvell.
During his stint at FSU, Williams appeared in four games in 2023 and nine in 2024, with an injury sidelining him at the start of the latter season. Over two seasons, he totaled 21 receptions for 267 yards and two touchdowns.
Despite his early promise and impressive performances, including a 44-yard touchdown against Syracuse in 2023 and a 33-yard reception against North Carolina in 2024, his college career at FSU was statistically unremarkable.
Williams’ departure is part of a wider trend of players leaving FSU. The squad has lost quarterback Trever Jackson, wide receivers Jordan Scott and Hykeem Williams, and offensive guard Jaylen Early.
Furthermore, wide receiver Jalen Brown has been eliminated from the football team and is anticipated to enter the transfer portal.
An unthinkable tragedy shook Tallahassee earlier this week. A shooting on Florida State’s campus killed two individuals and left six more injured.
FSU Police, in collaboration with various local and state law enforcement agencies, reacted to the threat and neutralized the shooter in less than five minutes. The suspect was later identified as a 20-year-old university student.
Norvell released an emotional statement:
“As this day comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the last 36 hours. I do not have the right words which fully grasp the depth of emotions which I feel,” Norvell wrote. “The sadness that has covered our wonderful University by the events that took place on Thursday is overwhelming. The hurt and anger are infuriating, while not knowing why something like this would ever occur.”
Florida State’s football program is at a crossroads. The combination of high-profile departures and the follow-up of a dismal season has cast doubt on Norvell’s ambitious goals.
However, with careful recruitment and a renewed focus on development, there is still potential for a comeback. The next few months will be critical in establishing the future of FSU football under Norvell’s leadership.
