At the 2025 spring game of the Buffaloes, Deion Sanders, the Colorado head coach, also known as “Coach Prime,” caught everyone’s attention with a loud message to the players in the transfer portal. The University of Virginia was accused of tampering with the players, and Sanders’ emotional protest made the whole issue visible and even intensified.

Coach Prime Accuses Virginia of Tampering in Heated Transfer Portal Clash
In a video of a team meeting where Sanders thought the cameras weren’t on, Sanders accused the staff of the Virginia Cavaliers of trying to recruit Colorado safety Carter Stoutmire with financial offers to transfer to their team.
“Virginia, you’ve got to stop,” Sanders said, underscoring the ethical dimensions of the issue.

Stoutmire, who is a central defender for the Buffaloes, endorsed the encounter and claimed his allegiance to Colorado and Coach Prime. He highlighted the fact that no financial enticement would change his decision, saying, “My loyalty is just so strong here. I don’t think there’s a number out there that could really get me to leave.”
This isn’t the first time that Sanders has raised his qualms over tampering. Although he didn’t stop Virginia from taking the running back Isaiah Augustave, the coach was quick to declare his opposition when a second player was being pursued.
This case brings to our attention the fact of unethical recruitment strategies that continue to become an even bigger issue in the legal period of the name, image, and likeness era.
Coach Prime’s Bold Pitch Amidst Transfer Portal Turmoil
Post spring game, Sanders grabbed the chance to talk to possible transfer students face-to-face. In an on-field dialogue with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, he said, “Anyone in the portal, you know I ain’t hard to find,” indicating his eagerness in terms of luring new talent.
The Buffaloes’ squad underwent massive upheaval, as standout players such as quarterback Shedeur Sanders and the two-way star Travis Hunter, who went to the NFL, left the team. Instead, Sanders successfully resorted to the transfer portal, where he found other suitable and, promptly, the best options, like Teon Parks, a cornerback from Illinois State.
Nonetheless, Sanders’ dependence on the transfer portal has sparked some fans to frown on it as a way of showing desperation. Even though the reaction has not been taken lightly by Sanders, he is still determined in his approach and has been championing the necessity for change due to the continuously changing college football terrain.
Deion Sanders’ recent actions highlight the challenges coaches face in navigating the modern college football environment, where NIL deals and transfer portal dynamics have transformed recruitment. By calling out unethical practices and actively engaging with potential transfers, Sanders continues to position Colorado as a competitive force, all while advocating for integrity and transparency in the sport.
