The Colorado Buffaloes geared up for their annual spring game following the pre-game festivities honoring Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders with their respective jersey retirements.
With Hunter and Sanders’ departures, Colorado is facing a crisis in multiple positions. The spring game demanded attention to be steered to freshman Julian Lewis and Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter, who hit the field.
Salter and Lewis set the expectations in the 45-minute scrimmage, followed by seven-on-seven drills, but Joseph Williams, Arden Walker, and Tawfiq Byard stole the show.
But who was the better performer, Salter or Lewis?

Kaidon Salter’s Performance
Even though Lewis, a 5-star freshman, made his debut in the spring game, Salter had a better performance. In the early stages of the scrimmage, Salter had all the patience for himself and used his legs effectively to keep the plays alive.
The offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur, kept Salter rolling out for much of the action. Salter operated the offense more effortlessly and efficiently than Lewis, even though Salter ended up settling for mostly check-downs.
However, as Deion Sanders noted, both quarterbacks have “ways to go.”
Julian Lewis’s Performance
There’s no doubt that Lewis is a five-star recruit. He is the third-ranked pocket passer in the 2025 class. Coach Sanders has previously indicated that Lewis is getting every chance to clinch the starting quarterback position.
While the competition with Salter only made him better, especially in terms of throws this spring, many fans still believe that the experienced Salter will win the battle for the starting quarterback position.
It was Lewis’s first opportunity on Saturday to show a glimpse of what’s to come from him. However, Salter was the better quarterback that day.
Lewis wasn’t given much room to operate by the first-team defense, and the true freshman did not make many splash plays. One of the highlights of his performance was the 16-yard completion to Kam Mikell.
While Salter had a better quarterback performance on Saturday, others were the standouts. Atkins showed off stunning skills at the spring game on Saturday. On the other hand, Walker’s highlight came relatively early, beating stud left tackle Jordan Seaton to get a spring game sack of Lewis.
