Before acquiring the “Wildcats” moniker, Northwestern University teams were known as “The Purple” and “The Fighting Methodists.” The transition began in 1924 when Wallace Abbey of the Chicago Tribune referred to the football squad as “wildcats” during an exciting game against the University of Chicago.
The nickname stuck, and the university formally adopted “Wildcats” shortly afterward.
Northwestern Wildcats Mascot History: Who is Willie the Wildcat?
Northwestern’s athletic department and an advertising agency collaborated to design the Willie the Wildcat logo in 1933. Willie first appeared in 1947, when the Alpha Delta fraternity members dressed up as wildcats for the Homecoming procession.
The original outfit required two people: one in front and one in the back. Notably, in 1948, two female students wore the costume to a Notre Dame game, challenging gender standards.
Evolution of the Mascot: Modernizing Willie
Willie has changed dramatically throughout the years. In 2007, the mascot received a considerable makeover, resulting in a sleeker and more lively appearance. Multiple kids now play Willie, each bringing enthusiasm to the character.

Willie is more than simply a fixture at sporting events. He plays a vital role in community engagement, appearing at events such as the Fourth of July Fun Run to entertain and motivate youth.
In 2024, Northwestern increased Willie’s reach by allowing him to attend private events, the proceeds of which boosted the mascot program.
Being Willie is both an honor and a responsibility. Students who take on the role must balance academics and mascot responsibilities, which include practices, games, and community activities.
