Fans and potential WNBA Draft selections alike eagerly anticipated each team’s selection Monday night. It was a night that brought high emotions and fulfilled dreams. Many stories emerged from the event, but one of the most intriguing is the selection of UConn guard Kaitlyn Chen.

Kaitlyn Chen Drafted 30th Overall by Golden State Valkyries
Kaitlyn Chen and Caroline Ducharme attended the WNBA Draft to support their UConn teammate, Paige Bueckers. Ducharme, a 6’2″ guard, was not drafted as she had earlier confirmed that she would return to the UConn Women’s Basketball program for the upcoming season.
On the other hand, Chen was selected 30th overall in the third round of the 2025 WNBA Draft by the Golden State Valkyries, the league’s newest expansion team.
Chen and Ducharme play for UConn, and both have great futures ahead of them. While Paige Bueckers was expected to be drafted, Chen had no idea she would be and might not have attended the event if not for supporting her teammates.
Caroline Ducharme’s Bizarre Actions During WNBA Draft
During the post-draft press conference, Chen was asked, “You said you came in with no expectation, but as the draft went on and got into the third round, did you start feeling any emotions, anxiety, or nerves?”
Kaitlyn Chen says that Caroline Ducharme told her to stay ready as the WNBA Draft went on:

She responded with a funny anecdote from her teammate.
“Not really, but Caroline next to me was saying, ‘Be ready.’ She almost didn’t let us use the bathroom, just in case.”
Interestingly, fans have been impressed with Caroline’s “no bathroom break” plan during the third round.
It would have been unpleasant to get picked while you’re in the bathroom. At least Ducharme helped Chen avoid that situation. Her decision eventually paid off when she was selected. Chen said Caroline was in her ears throughout the pick as she reminded her to “be ready.”

In total, three players from UConn were selected: Paige Bueckers (1st overall by Dallas Wings), Kaitlyn Chen (30th overall by Golden State Valkyries), and Aubrey Griffin (37th overall to the Minnesota Lynx).
They are surely thrilled to be drafted and must now work hard to achieve their career goals and dreams. Caroline’s support eventually paid off, as she saw her friends get selected. Her time will come in the future, and her friends will be there to support her, too.
