Former UNC 5-Star Recruit Ian Jackson Reaffirms Commitment to Become a Top 10 Draft Choice

Ian Jackson, a former five-star recruit, is making his way across the transfer portal with purpose. After one season at North Carolina, he’s eyeing a new home. His goal is to once again gain his status as a top 10 NBA Draft pick. This weekend’s visit to St. John’s could be the first step.

UNC 5-Star Ian Jackson Is All Set to Reclaim His Top 10 Draft Choice

Jackson’s time at North Carolina showed his worth. He averaged 11.9 points per game, which ranked him second on the team, despite starting only 12 games. His efficiency stood out, 45% from the field and 39% from three. Nine times, he scored 20 or more points, including a career-high 27.

On the X social media platform, Frankie Vision posted, “Captain Jack is primed for a HUGE breakout year. I’m 100% positive he will play his way back into being a Top 10 Pick.” Although he had put in the work, the position had consistently eluded him.

From late December to mid-January, he was electric, posting six 20-point games in seven outings. But his production dipped late, with only one 20-point game after January 15. In the NCAA Tournament, he averaged just five points across two games.

Some point to scheme issues at UNC, where he often came off the bench. Others see a young player still finding his rhythm.

Now, Jackson is looking for a program that maximizes his scoring ability. St. John’s, led by Rick Pitino, feels like a natural fit. The Red Storm struggled offensively last season despite a stout defense. They bowed out early in the tournament, lacking the firepower to match their Final Four potential. Jackson could change that.

His ability to create shots goes well with Pitino’s fast-paced style.

The Bronx native’s visit to St. John’s this weekend was significant. Playing near family and friends can be appealing to the young star. More importantly, Pitino’s track record suggests he’d give Jackson the keys to the offense. Unlike at UNC, where he was sometimes buried in the rotation, St. John’s offers a chance to shine as the focal point.

But St. John’s isn’t alone in the race. Arkansas, under John Calipari, has been mentioned. Kentucky, led by Mark Pope, is also making a push. Kentucky was a finalist for Jackson before he chose UNC, and Pope’s recent transfer portal success, adding players like Jayden Quaintance and Jaland Lowe, makes them a contender.

Still, St. John’s holds the edge, with a decision likely by early next week.

Jackson’s choice isn’t just about playing time. It’s about proving he’s NBA-ready. At UNC, he showed he can score efficiently and stretch defenses. His 39% three-point shooting is a weapon, and at 6’5”, he’s got the size for a pro guard. But scouts want consistency.

A strong season under a coach like Pitino, who’s sent dozens to the NBA, could solidify his draft stock.
