The college football world was surprised by Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s holdout, demanding higher NIL compensation, which led to his dismissal from the program. The five-star recruit, who is now expected to enter the transfer portal this spring, leaves behind a strained relationship with the Volunteers.
As the fallout sparked debate over his actions, Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal took the opportunity to reaffirm his program’s stance, distancing himself from such controversies. Iamaleava’s situation has become a contention, intensifying the conversation around NIL deals in college football.

Miami’s Cristobal Clarifies Position Amidst Iamaleava’s NIL Holdout Fallout
Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal recently addressed the ongoing debate surrounding Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s holdout. Iamaleava’s demands for higher NIL compensation led to his dismissal from the program.
Cristobal was firm in his stance, stating that Miami would not tolerate such actions.
“We’re not going to do that at Miami,” Cristobal told On3. “And I say that without any hesitation. Suppose anyone thinks that they can be the best player in the world. If they wanna play holdout, they might as well play get out. I don’t want to do that; I don’t want Miami to become that. Too many guys have sweat, bled, and have laid on the line on that field to ever become that kind of program.”
Cristobal’s message was clear- Miami’s culture would not accommodate players prioritizing financial demands over team unity.
“They can be the best player in the world. If they wanna play holdout, they might as well play get out. I don’t want to do that. I don’t want Miami to become that. Too many guys have sweat, bled, and have laid on the line on that field to ever become that kind of program.”
Iamaleava initially signed a deal with Tennessee in 2022, which was around $2 million annually, and sought an increase to $4 million. Despite leading the Vols to their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in 2024, Tennessee chose to part ways with Iamaleava, setting a significant precedent for college football.
Cristobal expressed concern over the potential ripple effects of such actions.
“Once you allow that to happen and agree to it, prepare for a line of 80 guys to do the same thing,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of staying true to the program’s values and making decisions that benefit the team.

As the transfer portal opens this Wednesday, Cristobal and the Hurricanes are expected to be active, looking to bolster their 2025 roster ahead of their season opener against Notre Dame on Aug. 31. Meanwhile, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel stood firm in rejecting Iamaleava’s demands, helping establish a key precedent in college football.
