The New Orleans Saints have suddenly emerged as a possible quarterback destination as early as the first round after a surprising injury report.
Shedeur Sanders Suddenly Emerges As a Potential Option for New Orleans Saints After Injury News
The Saints, currently holding the ninth overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, received news that their starting quarterback, Derek Carr, is dealing with a shoulder injury that puts his status for the season up in the air.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport was the first to report the news.

Taking Carr’s injury into play, the Saints emerge as a potential landing spot for a quarterback of the future. Even prior to his injury, there had been rumblings around the NFL about New Orleans moving on from Carr as new head coach Kellen Moore came to town.
Early on, Moore expressed his desire to work with Carr and displayed no notion of a quarterback selection in the first round.
Though much remains to be known about his injury, Shedeur Sanders’ name will likely be linked to the Saints as the draft nears ever closer.
Sanders, widely regarded as the second-best signal-caller in the 2025 draft class, presents a hard draft projection for many analysts. Some reports state he may go as high as No. 2 to the Cleveland Browns, who also present a situation where they could use a young passer.
The New York Giants at No. 3 were the early favorite — but they signed two veteran quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency, potentially signaling a different direction in the draft.
New Orleans is all the way down at No. 9, which may be too far down to select Sanders.
But if they believe in him as a prospect, they would be a requisite landing spot for the talented Buffaloes passer.
As a senior in 2024, Sanders completed 74.0% of his passes for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns versus 10 interceptions. He established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation and a potentially high draft pick.
