“When you got that ball in your hand, you are carrying the hopes and dreams of this whole university!” Sapp was caught on tape yelling at his quarterbacks, piling the pressure on early to fill the Shedeur-shaped gap in Colorado.
Currently, the more senior of the two quarterbacks is projected to start. Over the last few years, Julian Lewis has been one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the NCAA. Salter threw for 6,438 total yards of offense and 66 touchdowns during his two seasons with Liberty. The quarterback has also rushed for 1,676 yards since 2023.
The second of Colorado’s recent quarterback recruits, Julian Lewis, lacks Salter’s experience, but he certainly has the talent. Lewis is a five-star recruit from Carrollton, Georgia, ranked as the third-best quarterback in the class of 2025. He also had offers from almost every program in the country, including Ohio State, the current champion.
Coach Prime Encourages Quarterback Battle
Speaking to the media recently, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders revealed he’s encouraging the battle between the two quarterbacks going into next season.
“A couple of quarterbacks are fighting for who’s going to be who, [but] we don’t know,” Sanders said in his opening statement,” Sanders said. “No one’s getting the nod right now. We’re testing both of them to see how they react to what [offensive coordinator] Pat [Shurmur] is throwing at them.”

Sanders also revealed exactly what he’s looking for in a quarterback going into next season, citing leadership as the main trait he’s looking for.
“Leadership, being able to see the field, being about rally those guys around… You’ve got to have a bona fide leader,” Sanders explained.
We will get to see both quarterbacks in action next week, with the Black and Gold Spring game set for April 19.
