Sonia Citron, a standout guard for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, has rapidly established herself as one of the most dynamic talents in women’s college basketball. Born October 22, 2003, in White Plains, New York, Citron’s path to success has been shaped significantly by her parents, Yolanda and William Citron.
According to USA Basketball, William Citron played college basketball at Bradley University. His deep understanding and love for the sport became a guiding force in Sonia’s early development.
She picked up a basketball in the second grade, inspired by her father’s passion and insight. William played an active role in nurturing her skills, competitive mindset, and discipline from an early age. Yolanda Citron, while maintaining a more private presence, has been equally vital in Sonia’s growth.
Sonia’s rise at Notre Dame began in 2022. As a freshman, she became one of only two first-year players nationwide to average at least 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
In her sophomore campaign, she elevated her game, posting 14.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per contest. She earned first-team All-ACC honors, was again named to the All-ACC Academic Team, and was recognized as Notre Dame’s Defensive Player of the Year.

The 2024 ACC Tournament championship belonged to Notre Dame when Citron led their team with crucial contributions as a junior. Her excellent performance earned her three major Notre Dame honors: First-team All-ACC Tournament, second-team All-ACC, and All-ACC Academic Team—all demonstrating again how well her parents built her skills.
Notre Dame guard Sonia Citron is projected to go No. 2 in the WNBA Draft, per USA Today, landing with the Seattle Storm. With Olivia Miles staying in college but transferring, Citron’s stock has risen significantly. She averaged 14.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.9 steals this season.
