As Greg McDermott’s Retirement Looms Alan Huss Rejoins Creighton Staff As the Coach-in-Waiting

After two years at High Point and an NCAA Tournament berth — the first in team history — head coach Alan Huss is headed to Creighton to rejoin Greg McDermott’s staff as the “coach-in-waiting,” sources told The Field of 68.

McDermott, who has coached the Bluejays since 2010, is coming off a fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. While he doesn’t have an exact timeline on retirement, it will likely be within the next two seasons, sources told The Field of 68.

Alan Huss Rejoins Creighton, To Replace Greg McDermott After Retirement

Huss, who played for Creighton under Dana Altman from 1997 to 2001, was a part of three NCAA Tournament teams as part of the Bluejays’ Kyle Korver era. He played in 94 games, averaging 3.2 points.

He entered the high school coaching ranks in 2004, starting as an assistant at Eisenhower High School before taking over Decatur Christian High School in 2006 and Culver Military Academy in 2007. In 2010, he took over La Lumiere where he compiled a 102-19 record in four years.

From there, he would take his first college job, as an assistant under Craig Neal from 2014 to 2017, before returning to Creighton, under McDermott as an assistant in 2017.

Huss and McDermott were together at Creighton from 2017 to 2023, where the Bluejays saw four NCAA Tournament appearances, an NIT quarterfinal appearance in 2019 and a 24-7 record and No. 11 Associated Press Poll ranking in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season.

Together, the two coaches made a run to the Sweet 16 in 2021, and an Elite Eight run in 2023, after which Huss was hired at High Point in his first head coaching position.

At High Point, Huss led the Panthers to Big South regular season championships in 2024 and 2025, missing the tournament his first year after an upset loss by No. 5 Longwood in the Big South Tournament semifinals. In 2025, the Panthers broke through, going 14-2 in conference play and rolling through the Big South Tournament, clinching a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They lost to No. 4 Purdue 75-63.
