The 2025 WNBA Draft, set for April 14, will be held at The Shed in Hudson Yards in New York City. The draft follows the conclusion of the 2024–25 NCAA season, which saw UConn win its 12th title, and represents a key moment for teams looking to reshape their rosters.
With the draft less than a week away, let’s examine which team has the first overall pick and how it was obtained.

Who Has the First Overall Pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft?
The Dallas Wings hold the first overall pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft. The Wings secured the No. 1 spot via a swap rights agreement with the Chicago Sky, giving them a 45.4% chance in the WNBA Draft Lottery, which took place on Nov. 17, 2024.
For just the second time in franchise history, the Dallas Wings will make the first selection in the WNBA Draft. This time, however, they earned the No. 1 pick outright, winning the 2025 lottery with a 22.7% chance after a tough two-season stretch that saw them finish with a combined 31-49 record. Their previous top selection came in 2021 via a trade.
This year’s draft also marks the debut of the Golden State Valkyries, who hold the fifth pick. The first round includes 12 total selections, though one is absent due to the Las Vegas Aces’ forfeited pick.
This top pick gives Dallas a prime opportunity to land a franchise-altering talent. Currently, many are predicting UConn guard Paige Bueckers to be selected first, who capped off her college career with a national title win over South Carolina.
Bueckers averaged 19.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 2.1 steals per game, shooting 53.4% from the field, 41.9% from three, and 88.9% at the line.
Despite rumors suggesting she may not be keen on joining the Wings, she remains the consensus No. 1 choice. Bueckers is widely viewed as a generational scorer and playmaker who can shift the trajectory of any team.
With established stars like Arike Ogunbowale already on the roster, Dallas has the chance to build a contender around a dynamic rookie and reshape its future in a competitive WNBA landscape.
