The Cougars did not waste any time this offseason. In a bombshell move, BYU has landed star guard Rob Wright in one of the most shocking deals since the transfer portal was enacted.

Just this past Monday, Baylor guard Rob Wright decided to enter the transfer portal. With his move, he immediately became one of the most sought-after players on the market.
This past season, the rising Sophomore averaged 11.5 points, 4.2 assists, and 2.1 rebounds. A former Montverde Academy standout, Wright played alongside Maryland’s Derik Queen, Georgia’s Asa Newell, UConn’s Liam McNeeley, and the expected number-one pick in this year’s NBA Draft, Cooper Flagg.
The academy’s starting five is considered one of the best ever, with each player making an immediate impact during their respective collegiate debut seasons.
Former Montverde coach, Kevin Boyle, shared his thoughts on the team;
“We had never had that many guys leave at once then turn around and have this much success in Year 1… Five of them will average more points in college this year than they did at Montverde last year. So unselfish, so selfless, just a special, special group.”
The coach continued, “I think it’s clear to any basketball guy that the two greatest high school teams ever were the 2024 and the 2020 Montverde teams — If you took those guys last year and took a couple of guys in the portal, you’ve got a legitimate chance to win a national title.”
BYU head coach Kevin Young took Boyle’s words to heart, as his ultimate goal is to win a national championship.
Bringing in Wright is a terrific start to a crucial offseason. Fresh off a 26-10 season, in which the Cougars finished third in the Big 12, ultimately losing to Houston in the Big 12 semifinal game, the program is expected to make a push for the national title next year.
Wright is the latest player to join a surging BYU program that has become a staple for producing NBA talent. His All-Big 12 honorable mention opening season reflects his promising upside as one of the best guards and silky ball handlers in the conference.
However, with a hefty price tag of $3.5 million, experts speculate the NCAA may investigate BYU for tampering.
Programs like Villanova missed out on signing the talented guard after heavy recruiting and negotiation with Wright’s team. The Cougars, however, are serious contenders for the 2025-26 season.

The sky is the limit for the Sophomore guard, as he’s expected to showcase his talents for NBA scouts next season. Don’t be surprised if he’s in the running for multiple collegiate awards next season, leading BYU as one of the top-ranked programs in the country.
