The mascot of the University of Delaware, the Fightin’ Blue Hens, has a long history dating back to the American Revolutionary War and has become a beloved symbol over time.
Why the blue hens? Lisa Gensel, the university’s archives coordinator, is frequently asked about this issue. “People constantly ask, ‘Where did that come from?’ “Why is our mascot our mascot?” she said. The answer is, “It’s never that clear-cut.”

The Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens Mascot Explained: Legacy and Symbolism
The Blue Hen’s relationship with Delaware extends back to the Revolutionary War. Captain Jonathan Caldwell’s company, part of the Delaware Regiment, was known for its fierce fighting spirit, similar to the aggressive Blue Hen chicks employed in cockfighting.
This reputation earned the regiment the nickname “Blue Hens’ Chickens,” solidifying the bird’s place in Delaware’s history.
In 1911, the University of Delaware designated the Blue Hen as its official mascot, a reference to the state’s rich history. The live mascot tradition originated in 1931, when cheerleaders unveiled a live Blue Hen at a football game. Over time, the mascot evolved, culminating in the development of YoUDee in 1993.
YoUDee has subsequently become a celebrated figure, having won several national championships and being inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame.
In 2017, the university launched the Birdgade, which features live Blue Hens at home football games. The initiative, a collaboration between the College of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Athletics, features birds such as Captain Cluckers, Private Poultry, and Corporal Doodle-Doo.
These birds, housed in a specially crafted trailer known as “The Roost,” connect fans to the university’s historical heritage.
Delaware Athletics and High 5 Hospitality strengthened their cooperation in November 2024. This cooperation included logo patches on the shirts of mascots YoUDee and Baby Blue, which increased community participation and visibility.
This collaboration demonstrates the mascot’s continued relevance and the university’s dedication to establishing local relationships.
