With the NCAA’s winter transfer portal for undergraduates closed since December 28, most college football rosters are already set for the 2025 season. Spring practices have begun, and teams are allowed up to 15 practices each offseason. Spring games are included in those 15 practices.
The spring transfer portal serves as the very last time college football programs can add players from other schools to join their team before the beginning of next season. Most high school signees enroll for the spring semester to graduate high school early, while some make it to the campus in the summer before the start of their freshman year.

What to Know About the 2025 Spring Transfer Portal: Key Dates, Rules, and Expectations
There always will be a few surprises in the spring transfer portal every year. This has become very common in the modern era of college football, which has seen the early signing period surpass National Signing Day as the biggest recruiting day of the year. Here’s everything you need to know about the spring transfer portal.
The spring transfer portal window begins on April 16. Players will have the opportunity to enter the transfer portal up until April 25, when the portal closes. However, they don’t have to commit or sign to their next school inside this window. It’s also important to note that this window is only open for college football and no other college sports.
This year’s spring transfer portal is much shorter than in previous years. The transfer portal windows were shortened by a combined 15 days across the winter and spring windows to bring less surprises and improve consistency for each school.
FBS and FCS oversight committees have attempted to remove the spring transfer portal window to help keep rosters together, as the season is right around the corner from the spring season. Unfortunately for them, this move lost steam and doesn’t look like it’ll be going away anytime soon.
There are few exceptions to both transfer portal windows, whether for the winter or spring season. Graduates can enter the transfer portal at any time, and players on teams with fired head coaches are more lenient, as they receive a 30-day window as well.
