Mickey Joseph Demands NCAA Transfer Portal Buyout Clause- Analyst Hints At A Solution

Grambling State Head Coach Mickey Joseph has demanded that programs be given compensation when one of their players decides to enter the transfer portal, an unprecedented demand that could change the way College Football operates forever.

On-air journalist and Host Of Locked-On HBCU Darrion Gray has admitted that he agrees with the Grambling State Head Coach and his sentiment, but he also stated that a few things should be considered with the proposal.

    What Is Mickey Joseph’s Proposal?

Speaking to the media on Friday, the Grambling State Head Coach had a few things to say in regards to the NCAA Transfer Portal, specifically in cases where a player enters the Transfer Portal and moves up to a better program.

Joseph stated that there needs to be some sort of compensation for teams like Grambling State University when SEC teams come in and take their players due to the amount of time and resources they put into developing these College Athletes.

“”I think there needs to be a buyout. If they move up from me and go to a Group of Five or a Power Five, I should get some kind of compensation for that. NCAA, if you’re listening to me, I need a buyout.”

Joseph also reaffirmed that he understands why players make the decision to step up due to the potential for NIL funding, especially when he’s aware coaches make the exact same moves.

“Coaches have been doing it for years,” Joseph said. “We shouldn’t get mad as coaches when these kids make decisions to take care of their family. I’m gonna say it again: coaches have been doing it for years.”

    Analyst’s Solution.

Darrion Gray, host of Locked On HBCU, reaffirmed in his recent podcast that he agreed with Mickey Joseph and that schools should be compensated for developing these players.

However, he also stated that if SEC Teams are cutting out cheques to sign players, they should also give a fraction of this money to colleges like Grambling State.

Gray also stated that Joseph’s proposal must consider a few factors.

If a player isn’t getting NCAA compensation, then should the colleges be getting anything out of the deal? Should it be taken on a case-by-case basis, or is it a universal rule? Should it matter where the player goes?

Citing an example, Gray stated that if a program like Ole Miss takes a player from Oakland, then that case shouldn’t be taken the same way as if a College like Mississippi Valley State takes one from Delta State.
