JD PicKell’s Breakdown: 1 Weakness and 1 Big Positive for Tennessee and Nico Iamaleava

PicKell emphasized the significance of connecting on downfield shots in revitalizing Tennessee’s offense. He pointed out that former quarterback Hendon Hooker averaged 9.5 yards per pass in 2022, whereas Iamaleava averaged 7.8 yards in 2024. Improving this statistic is viewed as vital for the Volunteers to restore offensive dominance.

According to reports from spring practice, Iamaleava has been successfully executing deep passes, indicating a leap in his downfield accuracy. This development is seen as a good indicator of the team’s offensive plan.

PicKell also stated that successful long plays require receivers to generate separation. The development of early enrollees and true freshmen in the receiving corps has been critical in reaching this goal, providing Iamaleava with consistent targets downfield.

Head coach Josh Heupel has challenged Iamaleava to become a more outspoken leader and make better decisions. This strategy tries to maximize Iamaleava’s abilities and improve his performance on the field.

Iamaleava has also prioritized physical development, increasing his weight to 220 lbs to reach 225-230 lbs. This extra heft is meant to help him handle the game’s physical demands.
