Deion Sanders and His Colorado Recruiting Plan

After a successful 9-4 season, Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders doesn’t look satisfied. With a contract extension in his pocket, Sanders looks towards taking Colorado to the next level. This weekend, as reported by the Prime to Colorado YouTube Channel, he will welcome six recruits that he hopes will be a part of the Buffaloes 2026 signing class.

Buffs Look to Beef Up Defense

As prolific as the offense looked in spots, the defense, outside of Travis Hunter, continued to let the team down. The head coach looks to bolster the defense. You cannot expect to win shootouts on a weekly basis and consistently win games down the stretch. Defenses need to force three-and-outs and actually get off the field as soon as possible.

    Shaun Scott, Edge Rusher

The jewel of this group, Scott holds offers from Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and Florida, to name a few. Right now, as many continue to discuss, Scott could effectively line up as a high school junior and see snaps at the Power Four program. Blessed with burst and flexibility, he continues to grow physically and on the field. With the potential to sign him, Colorado flips the discussion about recruiting if he puts pen to paper for Sanders.

    Malik Morris

Aggressive is the word that describes the Florida native. He breaks on the ball with single-minded anger. Subsequently, Colorado will need to battle the University of Florida for his services. The Gators are building a much-improved defense. Can the Buffaloes do enough to bring him out west? Morris is a see-ball, hit-ball carrier player. Boulder needs a player like that to give the defense teeth.

Building the Offense: In-State Talent, Playmakers, and Protection Prioritized

    Deacon Schmitt, Interior Offensive Lineman

Landing this three-star would hit differently for the Buffaloes. First, he grew up 57 miles from Boulder. As a result, being close to home adds an added benefit. Next, Schmitt ranks as the first or second-ranked prospect in Colorado by various outlets.

That cannot go understated. If Sanders can land Schmitt, it shows a dedication to bringing in-state talent. In turn, other recruits down the line could remember this moment. On the field, Schmitt brings a ferocious blocking set and the nastiness to play to the echo of the whistle.

    Gavin Mueller, Tight End

Perhaps the most intriguing player of the half-dozen, Mueller is a work in progress. That is to say, as a former basketball player, he does not possess deep experience on the field. Yet, he brings athletic upside to the table, drawing comparisons to current Cincinnati Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki with length and explosive potential. If Colorado can land Mueller, they will bring another playmaker to the field.

    Brodie McWhorter, Quarterback

When Bobby Petrino and Kent Austin target you for their respective campuses (Louisville, Auburn), you made waves in high school. The quarterback from Cartersville, Ga, currently leans towards Indiana and Head Coach Curt Cignetti. With a flood of offers, Colorado is kicking the tires to gauge his interest. Juju Lewis looks like the quarterback of the immediate future.

    Johnnie Jones, Offensive Tackle

Currently a four-star offensive tackle recruit, the Tampa, Fla. native brings a seven-foot wingspan to the table. Last season, opponents tallied 43 sacks against the Buffaloes. That will not help them challenge for the Big 12.

24/7 Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins advises caution, stating:

“Might not be the most polished corner protector as he needs plenty of technical refinement but is the type of big man that has a higher ceiling than most given the combination of his reach and dexterity. Needs to commit to the process.”

    Overview

Remember the ghost town that Boulder, Colorado, was, from a football standpoint, just a couple of years ago? The school didn’t attract the best talent. Instead, they floundered at the bottom of the then Pac-12. Say what you will about Deion Sanders; from his demeanor to his flashiness, he moves the needle to recruit. Talent wants to play there and will continue to as long as he patrols the sideline at Folsom Field.
