Cotton Bowl Rematch in August: Experts Favor Buckeye Standout, Call for Texas Changes

In late August, the Ohio State Buckeyes will play the Texas Longhorns in Columbus in one of the biggest games of the 2025 season.

This will be a rematch of last year’s Cotton Bowl and College Football Playoff Semifinal.

Do the Analysts Prefer Ohio State or Texas?

On3 analysts Andy and Ari broke down the matchup this week and believe Buckeyes star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith could be the X-factor in this matchup.

However, Texas might have the advantage at a couple of positions, including under center, per the analysts.

The duo went on to analyze how the Longhorns might be the more complete team right now and have a better chance of winning a national title this year.

With Arch Manning leading the way as a Heisman contender, along with a couple of changes at certain position groups, the Longhorns can do some damage.

How Can Ohio State Respond to Winning a National Title?

The Buckeyes can’t do much better than winning a national title last season.

It seems they always play well in the first year of an adjusted playoff format. They won the first-ever College Football Playoff trophy in 2014 under former head coach Urban Meyer. Then, in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff format this past season, they won it all again.

Now, it will be up to head coach Ryan Day to replace all of his talent from a season ago. While he is keeping a 1,000-yard star at wide receiver in Smith and an elite defensive back in Caleb Downs, he is losing his starting quarterback, Will Howard, and his top two running backs, TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. He is also losing some key pieces on defense.

While the Buckeyes should be expected to contend in the Big 10 like always, it remains to be seen if they can push for another title. The good news for Ryan Day is that a huge weight was lifted off of his shoulders by winning that coveted national title.
