Why Julian Lewis Committed to Colorado — and Why He’s Gunning for QB1 Against Kaidon Salter

The Colorado Buffaloes have a good problem at the quarterback position entering the 2025 season. Head coach Deion Sanders will have to decide between Julian Lewis and Kaidon Salter for the starting gig at some point.

Julian Lewis and His Decision to Come to Colorado

Julian Lewis, a five-star recruit from Georgia, is one of the more talented freshmen in the country at the quarterback position.

He committed to playing for Sanders earlier this offseason and recently chatted about it on “The Pivot.”

“I feel like I had to make the best decision for me…Prime and the whole staff at Colorado really helped me through that.”

Lewis threw for over 11,000 yards and 144 touchdowns during his storied high school career at Carrolton High School.

Can Lewis Beat Out Kaidon Salter?

The frontrunner in the quarterback room out in Boulder, however, might be transfer quarterback Kaidon Salter.

A former Tennessee Volunteer and Liberty Flame, Salter is 22 years of age and a lot more experienced when it comes to college football.

The former Conference USA Most Valuable Player has essentially been a full-time starter in each of the last three seasons. His 2023 season at Liberty was the most notable of his college career seeing as he completed 61% of his passes for 2,876 yards and 32 touchdowns.

He also only threw six interceptions during that season. But now, the Cedar Hill, Texas native will be facing a different animal as he looks to make his mark on a power-five program for the first time as a possible full-time starter.

While it didn’t work out for him at Tennessee, it can certainly work out for him in Boulder.

It might not be easy replacing a player like Shedeur Sanders, but Salter has plenty of experience to do so. But it might be tough fending off a player like Lewis, who will be gunning for him this spring and summer.

Plenty of eyes will be on that quarterback competition over the coming months.
