Jalen Woods Named Southern’s Starting QB — Is He Just the Last Man Standing?

The Southern Jaguars reportedly have chosen their starting quarterback heading into the late spring.

But was the decision made based on the fact that the team didn’t have many options at quarterback?

    Jalen Woods Wins Starting Job

According to Locked On HCU Podcast host Darrion Gray, Southern has decided to go with Jalen Woods as the starter for the foreseeable future.

However, Woods played sparingly last season and was good in stages. He completed just under 58% of his passes for 541 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. In his games, the team finished with a record of 4-1.

Gray recently spoke about Woods being named the starter and whether or not he was chosen because he was the last man standing in the quarterback competition.

Woods was chosen over the likes of Noah Bodden, Angelo Izzard Jr., and Czavian Teasett.

Can Southern Win With Woods at the Helm?

Last season, the Jaguars finished with a record of 8-5 overall but 7-1 in conference play, which was good for first place in the SWAC West Division. However, they lost to mighty Jackson State in the conference championship game, which put a halt to their season.

At this point, aside from head coach Terrence Graves and the rest of the coaching staff, no one knows if this team can contend in the conference with Woods as the starter. But in the games he played, he showed his ability as a passer and runner.

You would have to think that if he can get more and more comfortable as he gets more playing time in the spring, summer, and during the season, he should be able to make a significant impact.

Again, the team is looking to put a different punctuation mark on the season this time around after losing in the conference championship game.
