Duke QB Darian Mensah Will Help Single Mothers Affected by Devastating Wildfires

The Duke Blue Devils quarterback revealed on his X account that he will be using his platform to aid single mothers affected in California. Mensah grew up in California and wanted to get involved and help those close to him.

Mensah says “I knew I had to find a way to give back. I wanted to take a moment to talk about an organization I’m partnering with, Single Moms Planet. This is important to me because seeing the way my mom worked hard for us, it just made me want to give back to other single moms that need the help.”

Single Moms Planet has recently launched a fund to help single moms in California who have been impacted by the recent wildfires. The organization helps single mothers through a variety of programs, including financial literacy and mentorship programs. It also aims to help single moms start businesses and work towards their career goals.

How Will Mensah Fit at Duke?

The new Duke quarterback transferred from the Tulane Green Wave in December and was considered one of the top-rated players in the portal by many. In 2023, he Redshirted, but in 2024, he took over the starting role behind center and impressed many on his way to a 9-5 record.

Mensah ended the season throwing for 2723 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. The transfer to Duke was very quick, with their former QB Maalik Murphy announcing he would enter the transfer portal a day after Mensah on Dec. 9. By December 11, Mensah had announced he was becoming a Blue Devil, with Murphy heading to the Oregon State Beavers one week later.

Duke had a good 2024, finishing the season 9-4 and fifth in the ACC. It is a difficult conference, with the likes of SMU, Clemson, Miami, and Syracuse all finishing above Duke, but Duke will certainly feel they can go further in 2025.

It will be a very new-look offense with running back Star Thomas graduating, so Junior RB Peyton Jones will likely step up after a 317-yard and three-touchdown season. Leading wide receiver Jordan Moore still has a year of eligibility, and his 55 receptions for 861 yards and eight touchdowns will be a great weapon for Mensah.

The WR room is strong despite Eli Pancol graduating after 798 yards. Sahmir Hagans and Que’Sean Brown both had over 400 yards in 2024, so they will be solid targets for their new quarterback.

It will be a new environment for Mensah, but he is making sure that as his profile grows in college football, he uses it for the betterment of society. Helping single moms affected by the wildfires in California is admirable and shows the sort of person Duke will have behind center in 2025.
