“He’s a dominant upper-body thrower,” Petagna remarked. “The biggest thing where he was really going to have to make the transition and continue to develop is his footwork. And obviously, he can get away with so much.”
Petagna credited Lagway’s impact on Florida’s 2023 season, where he helped the Gators finish 8-5, including a crucial 5-2 stretch after stepping in for an injured Graham Mertz.
“He’s a Lambo,” Petagna added. “If any part of the engine starts to break down a little bit, everything else around him could fall.”
During his senior season in Texas Class 6A, he amassed 4,631 passing yards and 58 touchdowns. Additionally, Lagway showcased his versatility with 975 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. These impressive numbers earned him prestigious honors, including MaxPreps National Player of the Year and Mr. Texas Football.
DJ Lagway’s Spring Status in Question Amid Shoulder Injury Concerns
Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway is facing a setback as head coach Billy Napier confirmed Lagway is dealing with a shoulder injury that has prevented him from throwing during spring practices. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, there’s a possibility Lagway may not throw at all this spring.
“Since Florida coach Billy Napier revealed last week that star quarterback Lagway is dealing with a shoulder injury, that has been the biggest question from each of Florida’s spring practices thus far,” Nakos stated. “The answer each time has been ‘no.’ …Do not be shocked if Lagway doesn’t throw for the remainder of the spring. …I’m told Lagway’s injury shouldn’t require surgical repair but that no one wants him to risk aggravating the injury now.”
Napier addressed Lagway’s condition, mentioning both a shoulder and lower-body concern.
“Some lower body and some shoulder. “Our intentions here are to be very smart.”
