As the college basketball season comes to a close, the transfer portal window is soon approaching. But what are the exact dates that we’ll start to see players enter their names into the portal?
We’re here to break down all the important dates and a couple of new rules that will affect certain players and programs.

Everything You Need To Know About the College Basketball Transfer Portal, Including Important Dates and Rules
College sports have been transformed following the establishment of the transfer portal in late 2018. Arguably, no other sport has felt the impact that women’s and men’s college basketball have.
Each year, players hit the portal and change programs for numerous reasons, including playing time, exposure, money, location, and coach familiarity. But when exactly can we expect players to officially enter the portal and be able to make decisions regarding where they’ll compete next season?
It’s a little different for men and women, but the entirety of the transfer portal window is 30 days long. Below are the official dates:
- MBB transfer portal window: Monday, March 24-Tuesday, April 22
- WBB transfer portal window: Tuesday, March 25-Wednesday, April 23
The portal is set to open one day after the second round of the NCAA Tournament concludes for both men’s and women’s hoops.
At that time, 91% of of teams will be finished with their season, and those players are considered free to enter their names in the transfer portal. Some new changes to the transfer portal window include awarding players with coaches who depart from the program an extra 30 days. Their 30-day window begins the day after the coach leaves.
Additionally, graduate transfers can enter the portal at any date during the year with the deadline being the final day of their respective transfer window.
