This event was a proud moment for the entire HCCHS community as they witnessed one of their own take a monumental step toward a promising future in collegiate athletics.
Mendez’s journey to this point has been nothing short of extraordinary. Over the past few years, he has established himself as one of the top athletes in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) division, earning numerous accolades.
This past season, he played a crucial role in leading Holy Cross to its first-ever division playoff appearance. This achievement underscored his leadership and ability to elevate those around him.
Reflecting on his commitment, Mendez expressed deep gratitude to his school, teammates, and coaches for shaping his journey.
“I thank everyone at Holy Cross Catholic High School for making this opportunity possible. I will always represent the Crusaders positively in the things I do on and off the field at Saint John’s University. I share this journey with all of you. Let’s go Cru!” Mendez said.
His impact on the field speaks volumes. In the 2024 season, Mendez displayed his versatility and dominance in the six-man football format, carrying the ball 139 times for an astonishing 2,017 yards while recording 38 total touchdowns.
His ability to break through defenses, maintain exceptional speed, and finish strong in the end zone made him one of the most electrifying players in the league.
Coach Stredic’s Perspective on Jude Mendez’s Journey
First-year HCCHS head coach Hosea Stredic, who joined the school for the 2024-2025 academic year, has been instrumental in fostering the development of Holy Cross athletes.
He has witnessed firsthand the determination, discipline, and faith-driven mindset that Mendez has brought to the field. As he reflected on his star player’s college commitment, Coach Stredic turned to scripture for inspiration.
“Trust the process. Stay focused, work hard, and believe in yourself, but more importantly, trust in God’s word,” Stredic said. He also shared a verse from Jeremiah 29:11: ‘For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
Mendez’s ability to thrive under pressure and his commitment to excellence ultimately caught the attention of college scouts. The result? A well-earned opportunity to continue his football career at a storied program with a rich history of success.
Mendez’s decision to commit to St. John’s University was fueled by both the program’s competitive spirit and its unparalleled legacy in Division III football. St. John’s holds an incredible .723 winning percentage and boasts four national championships, making it the most successful football program at the Division III level.
Beyond the football field, the school’s strong academic foundation and team culture were major factors in Mendez’s choice.
Additionally, its location in Minnesota provides him with an exciting new chapter away from home, where he can continue growing both as an athlete and as a student.
