South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley shared how the team reacted after beating Kentucky in their regular season finale on March 2.
The Gamecocks ended their season on a high note as they secured a 78-66 win over the Wildcats in a highly entertaining game. The win helped South Carolina secure the SEC regular season title.

South Carolina Wins Coin Toss To Seal SEC Title
However, while the win helped the Gamecocks, they had to win a coin toss to confirm themselves as the No. 1 seed because they finished with an identical win-loss record (15-1) with Texas.
Speaking after the drama, Staley revealed that it felt weird knowing their fate was not in their hands, even after they had done their part.
“No, we just watched it in the locker room; I mean, it was kind of exciting, and the buildup was good, you know,” Staley said in the postgame press conference shared on the South Carolina Gamecocks YouTube page.
“I know when you are part of the equation, it doesn’t feel good to have your fate in a coin toss and I didn’t know that eight other sports use a coin flip, that was news to me. I feel a little better about it now,” Staley added.
Speaking on the game itself, Staley revealed that they had to make a small adjustment, including switching Georgia Amore’s position, to get the win.
“I thought when we got Amore going more right than left, that created better rotation for us, and I thought we did a good job capitalizing on our defense,” Staley continued.
Dawn Staley Gives an Update on Raven Johnson’s Future
Meanwhile, the game against Kentucky was potentially Raven Johnson’s last home game at the Colonial Life Arena. Johnson was given a rousing ovation by the fans, but Staley insists Johnson has not made a decision yet as she still has the option of returning next year.
“Classy touch by the fans. She hasn’t made a decision, and you know for me, it’s a personal choice, so I’m not going to push her either way,” Staley said.

“I’m gonna let her and her family decide what they want to do. Obviously, Raven makes us a basketball team. Raven is a winner. She comes back, (and) it increases our chances of winning a lot more basketball games.
“If she doesn’t, I’m sure the WNBA will welcome her. Probably not as well as we would if she came back. But Raven’s going to be a pro whether it’s coming out this year or coming out next year, Staley added.
While there is no immediate decision, Johnson’s attention will now be on helping the Gamecocks win an NCAA title.
