Matthew Golden Heaps Praise Upon 2025 Version of Texas Wideout Group

Golden, in the middle of answering questions at the NFL Combine, stopped to give kudos regarding the 2025 Texas wide receiver group.

That level of validation from a player set to make millions solidifies the star potential of the University of Texas pass catchers. It takes one to know one after his transfer from Houston averaged 17 yards per catch and led the SEC with nine scores. The twitched-up prospect profiles as a pick within the first two.

Looking at the 2024 holding as 2025 arrivals, you can see a nice blend of veterans and youthful exuberance. The best college teams can field a group of wideouts that can provide experience with route specificity and talent. New starter Arch Manning, backed by pass-happy head coach Steve Sarkisian, will lean on that unit to keep pace in the SEC.

Texas kicks off the season in Columbus, facing the defending national champion, Ohio State. Later, they face Florida and Oklahoma back-to-back. Then, the Horns make the trip to Georgia to face the Bulldogs.

The SEC, despite phenomenal defensive speed and pursuit, loves to throw the ball around the yard. Keeping up is the minimum, while engaging in a shootout wins UT their fair share of games.

    Ryan Wingo

Wingo, presumably lining up at the X-receiver spot, takes over for Isaiah Bond. Similar to Bond, Wingo flashes big-play ability.

Despite just two receiving touchdowns, Wingo also brings good size (6’2″, 210 pounds) to the table, using his body to shield corners away from the ball. Additionally, he provides excellent ball-carrying ability jet sweeps, averaging 20 yards a carry. Look for him to step in as Arch Manning’s favorite target.

    DeAndre Moore

While explosive chunk plays remain important, moving the chains cannot be understated or undiscussed. Texas, for all of its explosions, can rely on the sure hands of Moore.

When the offense needed the tough yards on third down, Moore created separation on slants and other underneath routes. At the same time, unlike many possession wideouts, Moore gets loose in the open field, leaving corners in his wake.

    Jamie Ffrench

According to 24/7 Sports, Ffrench ranked as the ninth-best wide receiver recruit in the nation. In January 2024, he decommitted from Alabama to open up his recruitment process.

Ffrench spurned schools like Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, and Notre Dame. The film shows the new enrollee’s knack for overpowering defenders after the catch, shedding tackle attempts as he heads downfield.

    Kaliq Lockett

The crown jewel of Texas’ 2025 recruiting class, Lockett differs from his fellow wideouts. He plays far larger than his listed 6’2″ height and 175 frame. Lockett ranked second nationally in 247Sports wide receiver lists.

The ease with which the future star elevates during contact catches will impress fans. Still raw in certain aspects, Lockett will become the Longhorns’ top target sooner or later.

    Overview

Granted, 13-3 doesn’t look like a disappointing season, but you can feel a palpable regret exuding from the Texas faithful. Despite not winning a national title in twenty years, the expectations continuously ramp up.

Arch Manning waited his turn and now looks to take charge. On the positive side, he will enjoy one of the top talent groups in all of FBS.

With each wideout bringing a different skill set to the table, Manning and Texas will move the ball with ease on many Saturdays.

However, with zero margin for error in the loaded SEC, finding a way to win on a weekly basis will become tough. Those rough times will force the offense to lean even more on the passing attack.
