Mike Lombardi had a long career in coaching and management in the NFL. However, he had not worked for an NFL or college team since 2016 until he was hired by the North Carolina Tar Heels as their general manager in late 2024.
Wanting to get back into a competitive environment, he took the general manager job at UNC in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina Tar Heels GM Michael Lombardi’s Salary Is Revealed
The North Carolina Tar Heels have been busy this offseason. They hired legendary NFL head coach Bill Belichick to a five-year, $50 million contract to take over the UNC head coaching job. Less than a week later, it was announced that Lombardi would be taking over as the new general manager of the UNC football program.
The move unites Lombardi and Belichick for the first time since 2016 when Lombardi was an assistant to the coaching staff from 2014 to 2016 with the New England Patriots when Belichick was the head coach.
Interestingly, the power dynamic between the two of them has shifted at UNC, as while Belichick was Lombardi’s boss with the Patriots, the opposite is true with the Tar Heels, but it’s more likely they will work more in a partnership.
In taking his new job at UNC, Lombardi is set to make a significant salary. This was revealed in the UNC Salary Information Database and reported on by Ross Martin.

Martin followed up with a tweet clarifying Lombardi’s official title at UNC.
FWIW, Michael Lombardi’s “working title” is listed as an “Academic Coordinator.”

It will be interesting to see what effect the former Patriots coaching duo has on the Tar Heels next season and beyond after Mack Brown’s six-season tenure from 2019-24. With Brown at the helm, they had limited success, losing five bowl games in a row and finishing this past season with a 6-7 record.

Belichick and Lombardi are aiming to rebuild UNC’s culture. Their efforts appear to be having an effect, as shortly after the Tar Heels announced their hiring, several players who had entered the transfer portal pulled out. They’ll look to maintain the momentum heading into the 2025 season.
