The South Carolina Gamecocks reinforced their dominance in the 2024-25 NCAA women’s basketball season. They did it with a decisive 82-54 victory over Vanderbilt on Sunday. While the team’s success was a collective effort, much of the spotlight was on how they would contain Vanderbilt’s standout freshman, Mikayla Blakes.

Dawn Staley’s High Expectations for MiLaysia Fulwiley
Blakes showcased her talent by recording 19 points and seven rebounds. However, her performance was not enough to counteract South Carolina’s overwhelming execution on both ends of the floor.
Following the game, Staley spoke about Fulwiley’s progression and the potential she sees in her as a future professional player. The decorated coach expressed confidence in Fulwiley’s ability to transition to the next level and compete among the best in the sport.
Today MiLaysia Fulwiley tied her career high with 24 points against Sandy. Dawn Staley says Fulwiley has what it takes to be a pro:

“I think MiLaysia’s a pro, you know?” Staley stated postgame, according to an X post from Jared Parker.
In the same interview, she also said:
“We’re just giving her the tools to operate in that space because it’s not just one way. You have to be multifaceted when it comes to playing at that elite level.”
Staley emphasized that while Fulwiley possesses raw talent, multiple aspects of her game must continue evolving to ensure long-term success. The coach acknowledged the young guard’s athleticism and skill set but stressed the importance of adaptability and mental toughness.
“Talent-wise, she’s got the talent, speed, athleticism,” Staley continued. “She has all elite all of that. Now’s that crux of playing in the league — how do you handle certain situations? How do you handle starting or not starting? How do you handle when you go 0-4, right? You’ve got to defend.”
The key storyline from the Gamecocks’ victory was the continued emergence of the sophomore. The young guard spent her freshman season developing under the guidance of head coach Staley. She has made significant strides in her second year.
Despite ranking sixth in total minutes played against Vanderbilt, Fulwiley led the team in scoring with 24 points, tying her career high. Her efficiency was particularly impressive, as she shot 10 of 15 from the field.
She had demonstrated her ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities while playing within the team’s system. The win improved their record to 25-3, maintaining their stronghold as one of the premier teams in the nation.
Preparing for Professional Basketball
While Fulwiley has already established herself as an important contributor to South Carolina, Staley made it clear that reaching the professional level requires more than just scoring ability.
“So it is all those things that we’re adding to what she has already brought to us. Because ultimately, she wants to be a pro. And if she wants to be a pro, there are things she has to add,” Staley added.

With additional refinement, Fulwiley has the potential to follow in the footsteps of past Gamecock stars who have excelled at the next level.
As South Carolina approaches the postseason, Fulwiley’s role will continue to be pivotal. If she maintains her upward trajectory, she could be instrumental in the team’s pursuit of another national championship.
