With former Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly heading back to the NFL this offseason, the Buckeyes decided to promote wide receivers coach and a former NFL wide receiver in his own right in Brian Hartline to the role of offensive coordinator.

Ryan Day’s Words for Brian Hartline
National champion head coach Ryan Day recently spoke on Hartline’s growth as a coach since he has been at Ohio State (hired in 2017) and how he impacted the championship team in 2024-25.

Hartline, who was born in Canton, Ohio, played for the Buckeyes from 2006-08 before heading to the NFL. He was the team’s offensive coordinator back in 2023 but took a step back in an effort to learn from Chip Kelly when he took over in 2024.
Simly put, Hartline is arguably the best wide receivers coach in the country given the NFL talent that he has helped coach and produce over his tenure in Columbus.
Hartline’s Track Record
After getting hired by Urban Meyer as an offensive quality control coach in 2017, Hartline has emerged as one of the best at what he does in the entire country.
A former 1,000-yard wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, Hartline knows what it takes to be great from a pass-catching perspective. There have been some true stars who have come through Columbus and gotten the opportunity to learn from and be molded by Hartline. The likes of Garrett Wilson, Marvin Harrison Jr., Chris Olive, Terry McLaurin, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Parris Campbell have all made the jump to the NFL in a big way.
They were all coached by Hartline, who had the chance to work with some future NFL receivers this past season in freshman sensation Jeremiah Smith, Emeka Egbuka, and Carnell Tate. If you want to be a great wide receiver and eventually make it to the NFL, going to play for Brian Hartline might be the move to make.

Time will tell to see if he can keep this Buckeyes offense moving on all cylinders in his old, yet new role as offensive coordinator.
