Steve Sarkisian’s Retaining Torre Becton Seen as a Big Boon to 2025, Beyond

Texas' ability to retain Torre Becton shows their commitment toward maintaining elite physical development and competitive edge.

The Texas Longhorns have enjoyed a remarkable resurgence under head coach Steve Sarkisian. With back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances and a historic draft class, Texas is officially back on the national stage. However, success brings attention, and the NFL has aggressively pursued Longhorns staff members.

While running backs coach Tashard Choice departed for the Detroit Lions, Sarkisian managed to secure a crucial piece of the program’s foundation — strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton.

Why Keeping Torre Becton Is a Big Deal for Texas Longhorns

Strength and conditioning are the backbone of any elite football program, and Becton has played a massive role in Texas’ transformation.

Over the past two seasons, his training methods have helped send 25 players to the NFL Combine. His ability to develop players into pro-level athletes caught the attention of NFL teams, nearly leading to his departure.

To prevent this, Texas offered Becton a contract extension and a raise. This move was to make sure that the Longhorns maintained continuity in one of the most critical aspects of their program — physical development.

Becton’s role extends beyond the weight room. He and his staff spend more time with players than anyone else in the offseason, shaping their endurance, strength, and overall athleticism leading into the season.

Becton’s connection to Sarkisian runs deep. Sarkisian first hired him as an assistant at Washington in 2010, later bringing him to Texas from Cal. Their long-standing relationship likely played a key role in keeping Becton in Austin.

His impact is evident in Texas’ recent success. The Longhorns went 13-3 in 2024, playing for an SEC Championship and earning a College Football Playoff berth.

Becton was recognized for his contributions, earning the FootballScoop Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year award. His focus on biomechanics and player-specific training has set a new standard for development in Texas.

With Texas transitioning into a new era led by quarterback Arch Manning, retaining Becton provides stability.

As the Longhorns lose key players to the NFL, Becton’s training programs will be vital in preparing new stars for the spotlight. His presence ensures that Texas remains a powerhouse in 2025 and beyond.
