‘A Coaching Star’ — FOX Analyst Claims HC Ben McCollum’s Drake Season Is One of Season’s Best

Head coach Ben McCollum’s debut season at Drake has been nothing short of spectacular. With a winning record and national attention, the Bulldogs have flourished under his guidance. Analysts have taken note, calling this one of the best stories this season in college basketball.

    Ben McCollum’s Remarkable Drake Debut

In his first season as head coach, McCollum has taken the Drake Bulldogs to unparalleled heights, garnering national attention and accolades from experts across the board.

McCollum was appointed last April after an extremely successful 15-year career at Division II Northwest Missouri State, where he won four national championships. His arrival at Drake was widely anticipated, particularly after former head coach Darian DeVries left for West Virginia.

Under McCollum’s leadership this season, the Bulldogs have achieved an impressive 23-3 overall record, including a 13-3 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play. Their defensive strength stands out, with opponents averaging only 59.2 points per game, ranking second nationally.

Offensively, the team has a balanced approach, averaging 71.7 points per game. Their outstanding run included winning the Charleston Classic title against tough opponents, including the Miami Hurricanes, the Florida Atlantic Owls, and a surging Vanderbilt team.

With McCollum’s strategy working in their favor, the Bulldogs could progress to the “Big Dance.” Nothing is guaranteed in March, but if this squad can do well in the Missouri Valley Tournament next month, the sky is the limit.

As FOX Sports reporter John Fanta mentioned in a recent social media post, the Bulldogs recently went on an 11-game winning streak before falling to Bradley this past weekend.

“Drake continues to be one of CBB’s best stories,” Fanta said. “Ben McCollum is a coaching star. Drake Bulldogs — extraordinary!”

As the season progresses, the Bulldogs confront a difficult schedule that includes key games against conference opponents. Maintaining their defensive tenacity and balanced offensive strategy will be critical for long-term success.
