QB Josh Hoover Returns to TCU in a Class of His Own

QB Josh Hoover is ready to push the TCU Horned Frogs to new heights as he returns for the 2025 college football season.

TCU Horned Frogs quarterback Josh Hoover is primed for a breakout season in 2025, and that’s saying something, especially considering how he looked last season.

The Horned Frogs made a “Cinderella” run to the College Football Playoff National Championship game just a few years ago, but can Hoover and the 2025 squad make another deep push for TCU?

Josh Hoover Primed For Big 2025 Season

An upcoming junior, Hoover had a decent 2023 season after replacing QB Chandler Morris. He threw for 15 touchdowns against nine interceptions, along with 2,206 yards.

In 2024, his first full season as the starter, his interception count jumped to 11 but was mitigated by 27 touchdowns and a TCU single-season record of 3,949 passing yards. The turnover bug didn’t leave him all the way; Hoover committed 17 total turnovers, including six lost fumbles.

This escalation in play was apparent. TCU went from a CFP berth in 2022 to not even eclipsing six wins in 2023. Last season, the Horned Frogs made it back to Bowl Season with a matchup against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in the Isleta New Mexico Bowl.

Last season, College Sports Network ranked Hoover 10th among the 16 Big 12 quarterbacks. Unsurprisingly, the top quarterback was Shedeur Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes.

Still, Hoover performed well and proved his doubters wrong. According to TCU associate AD Mark Cohen, Hoover was one of only four QBs in the nation to average 300 yards per game passing and have a passer rating of at least 150.

Now, in the second season of a new Big 12 that features teams like Colorado and Utah over traditional teams like Texas and Oklahoma, Hoover will try to lead TCU to another postseason berth.

The Horned Frogs will kick off the 2025 season with a road trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on the North Carolina Tarheels. They have a packed schedule; they will play three teams that made the CFP in 2024.
