Coach Kalen DeBoer Not Tied to Ty Simpson
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer recruited Austin Mack and Keelon Russell himself, and now Ryan Grubb has joined him from the Washington Huskies.
DeBoer and Grubb led the Huskies to the national championship game two seasons ago. After that, DeBoer went to Alabama after Nick Saban retired, and Grubb left to be the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. Grubb only lasted one season with the Seahawks before being let go, and now he is in Alabama.
CBS Sports’ Will Backus thinks that DeBoer and Grubb will choose Mack over Simpson because the three have a connection from the Huskies saying, “It’s clear that Alabama’s most important offensive coaches think very highly of Mack.
“Even though he has yet to see the field against FBS opponents, and he’s only attempted three passes in his two collegiate seasons, he’ll get every opportunity to battle Simpson for a spot atop the depth chart.”
Keelon Russell Is Also in the Running for QB at Alabama
Keelon Russell is the third option here. The five-star recruit from Texas, who was National Gatorade Player of the Year and an All-American, led his Duncanville, Texas high school team to playoff semifinals. He completed 238 of 343 passes (69.4%) for 4,177 yards with 55 touchdowns and four interceptions his senior season.
Simpson, though, knows the Tide’s system well and has experience with that offense as the backup.
In his college career, he has completed 29 for 50 passes (58%) for 381 passing yards while accumulating 130 rushing yards and three touchdowns with the Crimson Tide. But as Dalton Wasserman said to Athlon Sports, “If Ty Simpson can play like a top 10-15 quarterback, Alabama is a title contender in 2025. The rest of the roster is loaded.”

It includes wideouts Ryan Williams, Germie Bernard, and Isaiah Horton, who came over from Miami in the transfer portal. Williams is the phenom who, at 18 years old, recorded two touchdowns in his first game in 2024 against Western Kentucky.
The offensive line will see left tackle Kadyn Proctor, left guard Jaeden Roberts and center Parker Brailsford. The Tide’s defense also has several returnees who did not elect to enter the NFL Draft but returned to Alabama.
