College football insider Chip Patterson believes Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is among the top two coaches in the sport. While appearing on CBS Sports to discuss Day’s recent contract extension, Patterson explained why the move makes sense for Ohio State, citing Day’s impressive 70-10 record as head coach of one of college football’s most iconic programs.
Day recently signed a seven-year, $87.5 million contract with Ohio State, keeping him under contract through the 2031 season.
Where Does Chip Patterson Rank Ryan Day Among CFB Coaches?
Patterson made it clear that Day is among the best coaches in the country, despite the criticism he has received from fans and media. A clip of his comments was posted on CBS Sports’ YouTube channel.
“He is 46-5 against Big Ten competition, and everyone is going to talk about those four losses to Michigan. But that kind of consistency is something we didn’t even see in the Urban Meyer era at Columbus. He is now 70-10 overall, and when we start to think about where Ryan Day ranks among all the coaches in college football, he is a top-two coach.”
Ohio State Buckeyes 2025 Outlook
There are many questions surrounding Ohio State’s lineup for next season. Not only are several key players expected to leave for the 2025 NFL Draft, but the program has also lost multiple assistant coaches to other college programs and NFL franchises.
However, Day’s contract extension makes it clear that Ohio State is committed to him long-term.
During the 2024 season, Day’s job security was uncertain at times. Losses to Michigan and Oregon increased the pressure on him and his coaching staff, with some analysts even calling for him to be fired. But the Buckeyes responded, winning the College Football Playoff National Championship after defeating Notre Dame in the title game.

Moving forward, Day will need to stay aggressive in the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail to replace key departures and ensure Ohio State remains a championship contender next season
