Now that Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders has departed for the NFL Draft, head coach Deion Sanders is expected to turn to former Liberty Flames QB Kaidon Salter, who recently transferred to the program.
But still, there hasn’t been much clarity from Sanders on who will start for the program because five-star freshman QB Julian “Juju” Lewis is also in contention for the starting job. Regardless of whoever starts, Salter has been hitting the weight room like never before and is putting efforts into honing his craft at the Buffaloes’ indoor practice facility this week in Boulder.
Kaidon Salter Makes Eye-Catching Remarks About His Future
If he gets the starting job, Salter will have big shoes to fill as Shedeur Sanders leaves for the NFL. A program that was just 1-11 two years ago saw a tremendous transformation under Coach Prime. The Buffaloes made a massive step forward in Year Two of Sanders’ tenure. They wrapped up the 2024 campaign with a 9-4 record and an Alama Bowl game appearance.
Colorado will continue to build on this momentum in the upcoming season. As Sanders previously said, the Buffs are aiming for a College Football Playoff berth and a championship in the near future. Salter says he is forever ready to hit all these milestones.
On Tuesday’s episode of “Reach The People Media” on YouTube, Salter was seen working out rigorously and making confident remarks about his future.
“I’m a natural athlete, so I be eating this s***,” Salter stated. “The only thing that gets me is like the air out here. But I’m getting used to it. I really ain’t got no choice cause I’m already here. I’mma make it work,” he added.
Before coming to Colorado, Salter played for Liberty for almost four years. In the last two seasons, he recorded 6,438 passing yards and tallied 66 touchdowns for the Flames. His impression performance earned him 2023 Group of Five Player of the Year honors. Coming to Boulder was a bold move for Salter, but he is currently slated to be the starter.
In the press conference ahead of the Buffaloes’ Alamo Bowl appearance, Colorado offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur noted that he wants to put the best players in the best positions to make plays.
“I think we need to do our very best to get the best players in here at that position,” Shurmur said via The New York Times.

“We want to be a little bit greedy about it. Obviously, JuJu [Lewis]’s future is unbelievable, and I’m certainly looking forward to working with him. He’s got a bright future, and we’ll see how quickly that happens. But at some point here, I think we need to add another quarterback,” he added.
Salter is entering his final year of NCAA eligibility. A College Football Playoff berth is on the cards, but he will need to live up to the Colorado fans’ expectations — and win the starting job — before he can do that.
