Emeka Egbuka Etches His Name Into Ohio State History in College Football Playoff National Championship Game

Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Emeka Egbuka broke a program record in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

Emeka Egbuka has officially solidified himself as an all-time Ohio State Buckeyes great, breaking the record for all-time receptions in Ohio State history with 202 career catches.

Egbuka, who is in his final year at Ohio State, has had an incredible career for the Buckeyes. In a wide receiver factory like OSU, which has produced names like Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cris Carter, and others, Egbuka’s name often gets lost in the shuffle. Now, his name will never be forever be remembered in Ohio State’s record books.

Emeka Egbuka’s Career With the Ohio State Buckeyes

Egbuka was ranked as the ninth-best player in the 2021 recruiting class and committed to Ohio State to continue his football career. He was a rotational piece in a star-studded receiver core his freshman year, catching nine passes for 191 yards.

Egbuka took off in his sophomore campaign, catching 74 passes for 1,151 yards and 10 TDs. Egbuka shined as an outside threat for the Buckeyes with great speed and hands. He was a reliable target and solidified himself as a starting wideout.

His junior season was met with some speed bumps. In Ohio State’s Week 6 game against Maryland, Egbuka suffered a high ankle sprain that required surgery. He missed three games due to the injury. He finished the season with 41 catches for 551 yards and four touchdowns. Despite some serious draft hype at the end of the 2023-24 season, he decided to return to OSU for his senior year.

This season, Egbuka played alongside stud freshman WR Jeremiah Smith. Once again, he wasn’t the most popular receiver at Ohio State, but his performance was still outstanding. He now ends this season as OSU’s all-time leader in receptions and has a chance to get another record.

Egbuka’s Chance at Another OSU Record

While Egbuka has already earned one record, he is within reach of the Ohio State record for all-time receiving yards as well. He came into the game with only 95 yards to go and is inching closer to being etched in the Ohio State record book once again with 33 yards at halftime on four receptions.

It would be a wonderful way to cap off his career at Ohio State, but either way, Egbuka is a legend. He is projected to be a first-round pick by many analysts and scouts and will continue his production and consistency at the next level.

He was selected with the 17th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals in CFN’s latest 2025 NFL mock draft by CFN’s Will Helms. It was a popular player-team fit in 2024 as well before Egbuka opted to return for an additional season.
