‘The Next Colt McCoy’ – Fans Bluntly React as Texas Star Quinn Ewers Declares for the NFL Draft

Fans reacted wildly after Texas QB Quinn Ewers declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, with some comparing him to former Longhorn Colt McCoy.

Texas Longhorns starting quarterback Quinn Ewers officially declared for the 2025 NFL Draft earlier this week. This closed the door on his college football career, during which he led the Longhorns to a Big 12 championship and two College Football Playoff appearances.

Ewers had a controversial career, during which he was constantly criticized for inconsistent performances and, most recently, for being inferior to backup quarterback Arch Manning. Now, fans eager to see Manning start for the Longhorns are questioning what Ewers’ announcement means for the Longhorns and his own future.

Mixed Reactions From the Football World As Quinn Ewers Leaves Texas for the NFL

Texas quarterback Ewers declared for the 2025 NFL Draft on Wednesday, sending the college football world into a frenzy. Fans took to X (Twitter) to pour out their thoughts on the news, with some considering it a good move for the Longhorns passer, while others questioned the decision.

One fan wondered whether Ewers would have been better served if he remained with the Longhorns for another season. “A little surprised by this, given how the season ended. He has the tangibles to be a solid QB in NFL in the right situation with the right development but wonder if it would’ve been better to get another year under his belt in college + make more money through NIL.”

Another fan said, “Surprising, I thought he would transfer to another school for 1 more year. I’m a Penn State guy but live in the Austin area. Ever since Arch signed to come here most have wanted him to start, unfairly to Quinn. Quinn has such a team player and beyond professional. Best of luck.”

A fan commented on the Texas fanbase’s attitude towards Ewers’ departure, saying, “I think Texas is confident that Arch Manning can fill the bill and Ewers was kind of up-and-down anyways. They are waving good-bye to him and not crying too much….”

Another fan simply commented, “The next Colt McCoy.” Referencing the iconic Texas QB who had an underwhelming career in the NFL.

Quinn Ewers’ Legacy as a Texas Longhorn

Ewers passed for 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns during his career, cementing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in Texas history. In the latter part of 2024, rumors circulated in the media that he intended to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft. The Longhorns QB, however, insisted that he had yet to consider future decisions and was focused squarely on the remaining matches in the season.

The 2024 season ended with the Longhorns losing to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, and on Wednesday, Ewers answered the question that was on everyone’s minds.

“These past three years have been some of the best years I could’ve imagined,” he said in his announcement. “I’m truly thankful for the opportunity to play football in my home state at the best university in the world. With prayer and careful consideration, I’m officially declaring for the NFL Draft.”

Ironically, Ewers started his career with Ohio State, joining them for the 2021 season. However, Ewers would transfer to Texas after one season. He started the 2022 season and led the Longhorns to 8-5, 12-2, and 13-3 seasons. During his time as a Longhorn, Ewers was plagued by injuries, forcing him to miss several games.

Despite this, Ewers will be remembered as one of Texas’ best.
