The Ohio State Buckeyes’ playoff run and chance to win a national championship has been the sum of many phenomenal performances, from the play of Will Howard to the lights-out defense.
However, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly had nothing but praise for offensive lineman Donovan Jackson as he met with the media ahead of the game.
‘Unsung Hero’ Donovan Jackson Holds the Line During Ohio State’s Playoff Run
Ohio State’s offensive line entered the College Football Playoff hindered by two season-ending injuries to both of their starting tackles. This resulted in Jackson making the switch from guard to tackle absolutely necessary if the Buckeyes had any chance of competing for the national championship.
This earned him a great deal of respect from Ohio State offensive coordinator Kelly, who highlighted the difficulties that came with making the switch.

“Donny [Donovan Jackson] has really been an unsung hero there in terms of what he’s done,” Kelly told the media. “Because switching from guard to tackle is not as easy as I think some people maybe think it is. It’s a totally different game. A lot of times, you’re out there on an island by yourself.”
“You’re obviously also protecting the quarterback’s backside because Will is a right-handed quarterback,” Kelly continued. “So the left tackle position is critical for us.”
Jackson played particularly well against Texas, giving up zero pressures against a tough Texas defensive line, which proved to be invaluable in defeating the Longhorns. Kelly continued to offer Jackson high praise, calling him the Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
Above all else though, Jackson’s success at switching positions came as the result of hard work despite the inevitable hiccups. Kelly lauded Donovan Jackson’s character in the process, highlighting his unselfishness, leadership and dedication.
This has, in turn, lifted the team up as a whole and we are seeing the benefits of this, a team on the role looking for their first National Championship since 2014.
Jackson himself also benefits greatly from his run of form in the new position, as NFL teams can never have enough good offensive linemen who can play multiple positions when needed.
He will look to continue his blocking prowess ahead of the National Championship game on Monday with the hopes of winning a national title before heading to the NFL.
