ESPN analyst and personality Kirk Herbstreit bleeds Buckeye scarlet, even if he’s known for his objectivity. But another Herbstreit will be wearing maize and blue next season as quarterback Chase Herbstreit committed to the Michigan Wolverines.
What are the Wolverines getting in the son of the former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback? Here’s what you need to know about Chase Herbstreit
Chase Herbstreit Joins Bryce Underwood in Michigan’s 2025 Recruiting Class
Herbstreit wasn’t highly recruited, but he was effective at Cincinnati’s St. Xavier High School. The youngest son of ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, Chase moved from Nashville, Tenn., to Cincinnati as a freshman and quickly earned the starting quarterback job midway through his sophomore year.
His numbers aren’t gaudy, but Herbstreit is an effective dual-threat quarterback. As a senior, Herbstreit threw for 1,598 yards in 14 games, with 18 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also ran for 649 yards and eight touchdowns, flashing shiftiness in the open field.
He has issues with consistent accuracy, but the talent is there. He’s made a few impressive throws, displaying great arm strength and the ability to layer throws in between levels of the defense.
Herbstreit could outplay his modest ranking. He’s unranked by three rankings services with three stars from On3.
Herbstreit joins a loaded Michigan recruiting class, highlighted by fellow quarterback Bryce Underwood. Underwood is the No. 2 quarterback in our 2025 quarterback rankings and flipped to Michigan from the LSU Tigers after one of the richest reported Name, Image, and Likeness deals in college football history.
Still, Herbstreit has the size and football IQ to outplay his modest ranking, even in the same class as Underwood.
There’s sure to be some rivalry in the Herbstreit household now that Chase has committed to his father’s rival school, especially since two of his brothers attended Ohio State as well.
Michigan beat Ohio State, 13-10, in Columbus, Ohio, this season, marking their fourth-straight win over their rivals, all while ranked below the Buckeyes.
