What Happened to Jordyn Tyson? Arizona State Star WR Aims to Be Healthy Again in 2025

Jordyn Tyson's emergence has been a thing of brilliance in 2024, but he's set to miss some time this season for Arizona State. What exactly happened to the Sun Devils star?

The Arizona State Sun Devils are surely one of the feel-good stories of the 2024 college football season. Along with the Sun Devils’ emergence as one of the top offenses in the country was the rise of star WR Jordyn Tyson.

Unfortunately, Tyson is set to miss the remainder of the season which includes Arizona State’s Big 12 Championship Game and subsequent postseason run following.

    Is Jordyn Tyson Playing Today?

Arguably, the most notable absence on the field during the Big 12 Championship is set to be Tyson. Not only will Tyson not be in action during the Big 12 title game, after a surgical procedure this past week, Tyson will miss any postseason games the Sun Devils obtain following.

Tyson was injured in Arizona State’s Week 14 clash with Arizona. He was hurt in the early portion of the second half, and though specifics were not originally given during the game, his reemergence from the locker room in a sling following the injury put his status in doubt.

And on Tuesday ahead of the game, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham confirmed that Tyson would miss the Big 12 Championship Game.

“He’s doing well, he had surgery yesterday so he’s on the road to recovery,” Dillingham said. “It was unfortunate but we’re trying to get him back by next season and hope we can go from there.”

Dillingham continued, offering his thoughts on the adversity the team had faced this season and how he is ‘excited’ to see his players step up to the challenge.

And yet, the fact that Dillingham said that ‘no one can replace JT’ speaks volumes about Tyson’s talent and the connection that he formed with QB Sam Leavitt.

    What Happened to Jordyn Tyson?

Making his eighth catch of the game against Arizona, Tyson nabbed a screen pass at his own 20 yard line, scooting upfield before two different Wildcat tacklers met him. Upon the impact, Tyson’s body was turned and the full brunt of the tackle landed directly on his left shoulder with the weight of two defenders on top of him.

The first view didn’t look promising as he lay on the ground in pain. The broadcast cut back from a commercial break and showed the field-level angle that indicated just how serious the injury was.

Tyson went immediately into the locker room and was seen emerging later in the game with his left arm in a sling.

He reportedly underwent a successful surgery two days after the injury and is set to return for the 2025 season at Arizona State.

Tyson’s emergence saw him grab 75 receptions for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. A redshirt sophomore, Tyson is eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft, but his injury potentially clouds what would be his pre-draft process in the coming months.

If he’s set to return, his status for the 2025 spring football window may also be hindered.

Only time will tell what his decisions are, but Dillingham did speak highly about the potential of a return for Tyson to the Sun Devils in 2025. And if that’s the case, put him on your shortlist for Biletnikoff Award finalists.
