Washington heads to Rutgers for their second Big Ten conference matchup. The Huskies knocked off Northwestern a week ago in their first ever conference game as a member of the Big Ten while the Scarlet Knights are fresh off the biggest win of their season, a 26-23 road victory over Virginia Tech.

There has been plenty of movement in this game, at least in the spread. After closing business on Wednesday as a 2.5-point favorite, Rutgers opened up on Friday with just a mere single point.
The defending national champion runner-up has certainly lost a ton of talent and looks a shell of what they were a year ago, but it appears the market was a bit high on Rutgers entering this matchup. As such, we’re in pick-em territory here with this one projecting to be so close, if not move to a single-point favorite for Washington.
Prediction for Washington vs. Rutgers
Rutgers, under head coach Greg Schiano, has jumped out to a 3-0 start, setting its sights on the program’s first double-digit win season since Schiano’s initial run in 2006. With a manageable Big Ten schedule on the horizon, this matchup against Washington marks a critical moment for the Scarlet Knights as they strive for bowl eligibility for the second consecutive season.
Washington, the national championship runner-up last year after a loss to Michigan, comes into this season with a fresh look. The Huskies are now guided by head coach Jedd Fisch, a Livingston, N.J., native, who is bringing his squad back to his home state.
They’ve also introduced a new signal-caller in Mississippi State transfer Rogers, who took over for Penix, a 2024 NFL Draft first-round selection. Rogers has turned heads early in 2024, adding a dynamic presence to the Huskies’ offense.
On the other side of the ball, Steve Belichick, a former Rutgers long snapper and lacrosse player, now runs Washington’s defense.
I’m expecting a classic Big Ten defensive battle, with both teams relying on big plays to break through and put points on the board. Rutgers has been relentless on defense, limiting Virginia Tech to just seven points through three quarters before the Hokies mounted a late comeback with two touchdowns and two-point conversions.

The Rutgers ground attack, led by Monongai, will be the toughest test Washington’s defense faces this season. Look for Monongai to anchor the Scarlet Knights’ offense, while quarterback Kaliakmanis makes the necessary plays to propel Rutgers to a 4-0 start in 2024.
Prediction: Rutgers 24, Washington 20
