Additionally, the total has already gone up a few points, fuelled by impressive Week 3 offensive performances. However, the under could be the play, as it has hit in six of SJSU’s last nine games and in five of WSU’s last six against Mountain West opponents.

In terms of the spread, recent trends favor the Spartans. The Cougars are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 contests as a double-digit favorite, while San Jose State is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 as a double-digit underdog.

Prediction for San Jose State vs. Washington State

Former Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo has completely switched the offensive switch since landing in San Jose, throwing the ball 30+ times in each of the last three games. But it’s not only because Emmet Brown, who will get to face his former team on Friday, has been a revelation under center.

The running game has struggled to find a rhythm, with leading rusher Floyd Chalk IV averaging just 3.4 yards per carry. But it didn’t matter against Sacramento State, Air Force, or Kennesaw State, and WR Nick Nash has simply taken over.

He leads the nation with six receiving touchdowns, and against the Owls last week, he set the program single-game receptions record with 17 for 225 yards and three scores.

However, Washington State stands in the way of SJSU reaching a 4-0 start for the first time since the 2020 pandemic-shortened season.

The Cougars just upset in-state rival Washington in the Apple Cup after dropping 70 on Portland State in Week 1 and defeated Texas Tech 37-16 in the Mike Leach Legacy Bowl in Week 2.

The first-team defense has exceeded expectations, but not more than sophomore QB John Mateer. He’s been electric, averaging 10.2 yards per attempt with seven TDs against two INTs. But what truly sets him apart is his dual-threat ability, as he leads the team on the ground with a 39-314-4 rushing line.

While the Spartans don’t have the same offensive firepower outside of Nash, the Cougars’ defense has been a sieve, allowing 464.0 yards per game (ninth most) to San Jose State’s 248.3 (20th fewest). Wazzu will likely pull off the win at home, but expect SJSU to cover and for the under to hit.

Prediction: San Jose State 20, Washington State 24
