As far as college football rivalries go, the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series between Iowa and Iowa State is one you can never take your eyes off of. Beyond the fact that the schools are separated by only 130 miles in America’s heartland, the last six matchups in the series have been decided by 10 or fewer points, with half of those decided by three points or less.
While it has delivered on a promise to be compelling, the rivalry has not always appeared visually appealing. Neither team generated over 300 yards of offense in last season’s meeting when there was four times as many combined punts (12) as touchdowns (three).

In his ninth season at Iowa State, Matt Campbell — the third-longest tenured coach in program history — earned his sixth win in a Cyclones season opener last week against North Dakota. He knows the Cy-Hawk Series is not only special for the players but the fans as well.
“I think people want to watch rivalry football games and great games,” Campbell said. “I think that’s what this game has certainly stood for over the test of time. I think that’s what makes this game really special. The more you look at what you watch, everyone is tuning into the big games and games that mean a lot with a lot on the line.”
While Campbell has led the Cyclones to their great run of success, one that leaves him three wins shy of surpassing Dan McCarney (56) as the winningest coach in Iowa State history, his record against the cross-state rival is not one to celebrate. He has lost six of his seven games in the Cy-Hawk Series, though he is 50-33 in all other contests during his tenure.
On the opposite sideline, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is 14-10 all-time against Iowa State, but his recent success in this rivalry is something to point to in the Hawkeye State. He has won 11 of the past 15 meeting against the Cyclones dating back to the 2008 season.
In the new 12-team College Football Playoff era, games such as the Cy-Hawk Series have an added layer of importance. Not only is the rivalry a pivotal test on a national stage for both programs, but the winner will improve its chances of competing for an at-large bid to the playoff while the loser will have a path that is far more difficult.
