With the wheels of realignment stopped for the time being, one of the more storied rivalries in college football will return as Texas-Texas A&M will face off against one another again on Nov. 30, 2024, at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas.
It has been 12 years since the Longhorns and Aggies last faced off, and with Texas making the move to the SEC the two long-term rivals will renew a rivalry that began in 1894.
With the new world of NIL unfolding and money further becoming the name of the game when it comes to college football status, Texas athletic director (AD) Chris Del Conte and Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts met to announce a new sponsorship deal for the rivalry game moving forward.
In a joint press conference with the media in Houston, they announced a sponsorship with Cotton Holdings, a leading infrastructure support services company located in Houston. Further details of the agreement were not immediately available at the time of publishing.
Taking a Look at the History of the Lone Star Showdown
The rivalry took a 12-year hiatus after Texas A&M departed for the SEC while Texas remained behind in the Big 12. Reports at the time claimed that part of the reason for Texas A&M’s departure was to step outside their rival’s shadow and establish an identity entirely of their own. The final matchup was played in 2011, with Texas winning 27-25 on a last-second field goal.
Despite the rivalry not being played, the traditions developed as part of the Showdown have continued in the absence of the actual game. The famed “Aggie War Hymn” showcases the crowd locking arms and swaying from left to right to replicate a saw blade cutting off the horns of “Varsity.” This is what the Texas football program was known as before adopting the Longhorn mascot for good.
On the other side of the rivalry, the 27-story Main Building, also known as the legendary UT Tower, is bathed in orange lighting as opposed to the traditional white lighting as part of a signal that Texas has defeated the Aggies. Since the original lights flooded the tower in 1937, other events have been added to the list of reasons to light the tower orange such as commencement or a conference championship.
With the renewal of the rivalry now in motion, it bears mentioning that the current record between the two teams stands at 76-37-5 in favor of the Longhorns. The last game featured former Texas kicker, and current Baltimore Raven, Justin Tucker booting the game-winner to secure the win for the Longhorns in College Station. The Aggies won the previous year in Austin, Texas, by a score of 24-17.
