With Big 12 Media Days set to kick off, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy told ESPN that running back Ollie Gordon II is “going to play” this season despite a suspicion of DUI arrest on June 30. Gordon will face internal punishment and will appear at Media Days to be accountable for his actions.
Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II Won’t Be Suspended by Program
According to the probable cause affidavit, Oklahoma Highway Patrol pulled Gordon, 20, over in the Oklahoma City area after he was seen swerving and caught speeding 17 mph over the posted speed limit of 65.
The 2023 Big 12 Player of the Year had two open containers of alcohol in the vehicle and tested with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.
“I am deeply sorry for the sections that led to my arrest on June 30th,” Gordon said in a statement on Monday, July 8. “I sincerely apologize to my family, everyone in our program, including our players, Coach Gundy, the staff, Oklahoma State University, and our fans.
“Regardless of the outcome of this pending investigation, I did not uphold the values I have for myself and the values of the OSU football program. I am committed to learning and growing from this mistake and I will work to earn back the trust of those who I have disappointed. Thank you.”
While we do not know what “internal punishment” means, not missing game time for charges of speeding and a DUI sets the wrong precedent. It also tells players that actions have consequences — just not ones that hurt the team on the field.
