Former Washington Huskies QB and five-star recruit Sam Huard is on the move again after one season at FCS Cal Poly. Will the All-Big Sky Honorable Mention quarterback move back up to the FBS level or leverage connections and stay at the FCS level?
Huard’s landing spots are intriguing, but where could he be playing in the 2024 college football season?
Five Landing Spots for Sam Huard
Huard was once considered the “quarterback of the future” at Washington but failed to make an immediate impact, starting just one game in his short Husky career. He transferred to Cal Poly, where his high school head coach, Sheldon Cross, was hired as the offensive coordinator.
Now Cross has moved, and so has Huard.
Stetson Hatters
Scouts will find you anywhere these days, so Huard can stay on the NFL’s radar without moving up.
Stetson hired Cross earlier in the offseason. He has coached Huard at multiple stops, and the QB has been highly successful under him. Cross’ air raid system plays well to Huard’s strengths.
Washington Huskies
While Huard’s former coaches are no longer in Washington, his dad — former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard — is the head of fundraising for the football program. There isn’t much depth in the Washington quarterback room behind expected starter Will Rogers, and Huard could become the starter next season after another year as the backup.
Colorado State Rams
Jay Norvell was the head coach at Nevada when the Wolf Pack were the first team to extend an offer to Huard in high school. The Rams have an extremely young quarterback room and are an attractive landing spot for exposure and playing time.
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers offer another connection that could prove alluring for Huard. Current head coach Tyson Helton was at the Tennessee Volunteers when Huard was going through the recruiting process.

Tennessee was one of the only schools Huard visited aside from Washington and now Helton leads a Western Kentucky offense that runs the Air Raid system, which is appealing to a pro-style quarterback with a quick release like Huard.
Stanford Cardinal
Stanford is one of Huard’s top opportunities for playing time on the West Coast. Academic standards have proven a sticking point for the Cardinal landing players from the transfer portal.
However, Huard was at Cal Poly, one of the most prestigious schools on the West Coast. Assuming his academics are in order, he represents one of the few real chances Stanford has of landing an impact player from the portal.
