After establishing a record of college football success at North Carolina State, head coach Dave Doeren recently received a contract extension that ties him to the program until 2027. One of the longest-tenured head coaches in the ACC, Doeren’s salary and net worth also rank amongst the highest in the conference.
Dave Doeren’s Salary and Contract in 2023
After initially signing a contract extension in 2022 that includes a salary boost, Doeren added another year to his deal with the Wolfpack that keeps him in Raleigh through Dec. 31, 2027.
Announcing the deal, NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan — who also plays a significant role on the College Football Playoff committee — spoke highly of the program’s head coach as he prepares for his 11th season at the helm of the Wolfpack.
“We are very proud of the standard and culture that Dave has established for our football program,” Corrigan said via an official press release from the program. “We look forward to seeing him build on the progress we have enjoyed on and off the field under his leadership.”
After guiding Northern Illinois to consecutive double-digit win seasons between 2011 and 2012, Doeren became the NC State head coach in 2013. Since that inaugural 3-9 campaign, the Wolfpack have had just one losing season under their highly-regarded head coach.

Meanwhile, achieving six wins during the 2023 college football campaign will make him the winningest coach in NC State history. The program has been on the cusp of double-digit win campaigns in three of Doeren’s seasons, having only once achieved the feat — back in 2002 under Chuck Amato.
As a result of his success at the program — and subsequent contract extensions — Doeren’s salary took a substantial boost with his 2022 extension. It’s worth noting that the NC State head coach took a reduction in salary for the 2020 campaign as part of the financial impact of the global pandemic.
According to reports, Doeren’s salary from the 2022 college football campaign onward is $5 million per year. Previously, he earned $3.5 million per year. That rise made him one of the highest-paid coaches in the ACC, currently led by Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.
It isn’t immediately clear if Doeren’s most recent contract extension in Feb. 2023 adds to his existing salary agreement. As it’s only an additional year, it is likely that the deal was designed for protection against potential interest elsewhere rather than as a means of fiscal reward. That is, however, purely speculation, as his previous extension was also just for an additional year.
Doeren’s Net Worth
With an extension that takes him through the 2027 college football season, Doeren’s five-year contract at an estimated salary of $5 million per year would give the NC State head coach a net value of $25 million through the life of the deal.
However, that net worth figure only takes into account Doeren’s salary and not any additional benefits or rewards that might be included alongside his contract.
According to the most recent full contract details that College Football Network was able to find — via a records request by WRAL — Doeren has a laundry list of performance-related bonuses that he can bolster his salary with.

The following bonuses were correct as of 2021. They weren’t increased under a previous contract extension, but that isn’t to say they haven’t risen since the recent extensions. They do, however, give a ballpark idea of the potential earnings for the NC State head coach.
- $100,000 for an ACC Championship Game appearance
- $200,000 for winning the ACC title
- $250,000 for reaching the College Football Playoff semifinal
- $500,000 for winning the College Football National Championship
- $100,000 for a New Year’s Six bowl game
- $100,000 for winning a New Year’s Six bowl game
- $50,000 for winning a non-New Year’s Six bowl game
- $25,000 for a non-New Year’s Six bowl game
There is also a range of bonuses for total wins in the season. Starting at $50,000 for eight wins, Doeren can boost his salary by up to $250,000 for achieving 12 wins or more.
