After signing a contract extension in the wake of a bowl-winning campaign, Schiano’s salary as the Rutgers head coach in 2024 will be $6.25 million. His salary boost is the latest move in a long contractual history with the Piscataway-based program.
In the 2011 season, Schiano was making $2.3 million as the head coach of the Scarlet Knights. After his initial stint with Rutgers, he served in multiple roles at different schools, with his latest job as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State.
When he was fired from the Buckeyes, Schiano returned to Rutgers. He originally signed an eight-year deal that paid him $4 million annually.
After the 2023 season, a year where the Scarlet Knights finished 7-6 and won the Pinstripe Bowl, the administration rewarded their leader for his success. Before the extension, his salary was the lowest in the Big Ten, making the bump in pay long overdue.
Under the new contract, he will earn $6.25 million per year and receive pay increases up to $7.75 million for the 2029 season. He also saw his assistants receive new contracts as well. Offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca received a pay increase to $1.5 million and a one-year extension on his contract.
Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak — a big reason for the Scarlet Knights’ success last year — saw his pay bumped up to $1.25 million in 2024. His pay will continue increasing to $1.5 million for the 2026 season.
Schiano’s Net Worth
Schiano receives incentives for various accomplishments on the field and in the classroom. A Group A (Quick Lane Bowl, Belk Bowl — or its successor, — or Music City Bowl) bowl game appearance and win gives him an additional $75,000 each.
Any other bowl game appearance and win not on that list pays him an additional $100,000 each. If it’s a New Year’s Six game, those numbers increase to $150,000.

If he wins Big Ten Coach of the Year or any of the nine national Coach of the Year awards, Schiano gets a bonus of $100,000. He receives $25,000 bonuses if Rutgers has an APR score of 960 and another $25,000 if they finish in the top 10 nationally.
